Instead Of Throwing Out Empty Tuna Cans, Use Them As Last

Mar 27, 2024

With all the preparation that goes into planning a dinner party, it's easy for some things to fall by the wayside. Between coming up with a tasty menu and deciding where everyone should be seated, putting up inviting decorations may be at the bottom of your list of priorities. But that's a shame because even the simplest dinner party decor can really take your gathering to the next level. Luckily, there is an easy way to add a bit of pizzazz to your next party just by using some empty tuna cans.

The next time you find yourself surrounded by empty tuna cans, perhaps from making a party-sized portion of tuna salad, don't throw them away. Instead, toss them in the sink and start cleaning them so they can be turned into elegant candle holders. Just make sure to scrub away any tuna remnants, and remove the can's label (this can usually be achieved pretty easily by soaking it in soap and hot water for a few minutes). Then, all you have to do is place candles inside the cans, set them around your space, and enjoy the ambient lighting!

You can set the tuna cans around as they are, or elevate some on books or other flat surfaces to create a more visually interesting scene. The cans could also be set on top of traditional candle holders so long as there is enough space and there isn't a risk of them being toppled over. During the autumn months, these tuna can candles are also perfect for lighting up the insides of jack-o'-lanterns.

If you are feeling crafty, you can decorate the cans with a bit of hot glue, crafting materials like spare scraps of fabric or twine, and some creativity. Wrapping twine around the cans will create a rustic look while applying bits of lace will create something more dainty. For the experienced DIY-ers out there, tuna cans also make great receptacles for creating your own candles.

When planning a dinner party, sometimes the smallest things make the biggest difference. Tuna cans are an inexpensive and accessible way to make your get-together special. So, once you're done making the guest list, head to the grocery store to pick up your dinner ingredients and some tuna candles.
